We have had several outside presenters come to our campus in the past few years to present on things like drug abuse and relationship advice but we found that they were falling on deaf ears. My grade-level teaching team decided to try something new to combat this. By talking with the students, we found that their biggest complaint is that they feel adults can not relate to their experiences and that's why they chose to ignore most of the presentations. We then decided to give our students the power then to impact their peers. We created Project Awareness and gave the students the choice to pick their own topics. In its first year, we have had 3 successful awareness weeks on stress, peer pressure, and self-image. For the last of the awareness weeks, my students chose to focus on impaired driving. As the students are walking into our multipurpose room to hear their culminating presentation for the week, they came up with the idea of having a car there that was involved in a drunk driving accident for all to see as they walk in so they can understand the gravity of the decision to get behind the wheel. This is where your donation would come in. Please consider helping my students out to make their awareness project as impactful as possible so they can hopefully save lives by educating their peers on the gravity and seriousness of impaired driving.
