The dog ate my...board game? Homework has usually been seen as worksheets and book reports, but as our world is changing, I want my homework to change as well. My students are excelling at academics, and have rigorous academic practice at school. What my students do need practice in, however, is social skills. In order to give students practice in these skills, I am going to begin assigning quality family time, through the use of board games, for my students' homework. I'm requesting a variety of games including Trouble, Clue, Pictionary, Uno, Scrabble, and Takenoko. Quality family time spent playing board games will help my students in many exciting ways. They will learn social skills of taking turns, learn how to win or lose gracefully, practice following directions, and form stronger bonds with their family members. In a world driven by electronics, I want my students to take some time to unplug and reconnect with their families. Board games are tools that I am requesting that will impact my students, and their families, in many amazing ways. My project goal is to collect a variety of engaging, fun board games that I will teach to my students. Students will then become "game experts," and teach their peers different games. After understanding how to play the game, students will be allowed to check out games weekly, which will serve as homework. They can then be leaders in their homes and teach their families how to play, all the while strengthening their social and life skills. I have seen the positive impact playing board games have had on my own sons. My boys have demonstrated how much playing a board game can strengthen our bond, as well as improve their ability to follow directions, and how to be a good sport. I know that board games as homework can a "game changer" in my students' lives.
