ELLs are often dismissed as incapable, an inconvenience, or less than in comparison to their native-English speaking peers. This occurs despite the fact that these students already know two, three, or four languages aside from English. This project will serve to create a classroom library for my students that is accessible by those of any English language proficiency level. The nonfiction graphic novels will reduce the linguistic load for my students as they grapple with challenging academic content. The fiction resources will provide engaging support to complex language for them as they practice the skills we learn in mini-lessons. Processing a foreign language for six-and-a-half hours a day is taxing in and of itself; to then be evaluated on assignments and assessments whose content was barely accessible to begin with serves to keep those on the outside of native English-speaking society right where they are. This multi-genre classroom library of graphic novels will help break down this barrier by its use in independent reading centers, skills-based English language development lessons, and within content classrooms by content teachers of ELLs. Not only will this enhance the independent learning skills of our school’s ELLs, but it will also assist content teachers with providing materials in their classrooms at their students’ levels. Living environment will no longer be the hurdle that keeps these individuals from graduating. And finding the meaning of unknown words will be an enjoyable challenge for them, rather than an exercise in boredom and futility. This library will facilitate endless opportunities for students to engage with content and the English language.
