By building a diverse classroom library, my students will have their world brought to them. They will be able to learn about others and develop a sense of empathy and compassion from a young age. They will also be able to see their own families and cheer when they see someone in the pages who looks like them or someone they know. The titles I have selected not only represent the students I teach and their families, but some titles will also inspire meaningful discussions about others they are not as familiar with. Providing my students with a "window of opportunity", widens their world lens and their view of the world and the people in it. Reading diverse stories is an important part of building their global awareness.
