My students all come from vastly different backgrounds, socio-economic status, and have unique emotional needs. Having a classroom with multiple ages and grades creates opportunities for learning many topics through read alouds. One way my students have been actively learning throughout distance learning is through three read alouds weekly. This allows them to listen to someone familiar read on a variety of topics and engage in conversations. I believe it is extremely important for all students to see themselves represented in literature, as well as have the opportunities to learn about those who are different. It is my hope that I am able to continue to provide them with opportunities for read aloud through the rest of this school year, over the summer, and when I get to greet the same students back into my classroom in the fall. I want them to be able to read on their own more about a topic that is always extremely important but especially given the current events going on and understand that it is okay to feel anger in the situations occurring, and pride in who they are as people. In addition, I want them to have the opportunity to possess the materials to create a representation of themselves to coincide with the books "Teach your Dragon about Diversity" and the read alouds I will be able to read to and with them. I am hoping that I will be able to send home a book and craft to help them as we conquer summer school together!
