My students will be able to learn how to properly mix, portion and bake foods that will allow them to do for themselves as they move from a school setting to real life living. We create recipes and make them to be able to do at home or other living environment. Hands on experience is the best vehicle for learning and repeating a skill learned by a special needs student. They are entitled to the best tools available to teach them in their own way. Safety of non glass utensils is also paramount. These implements will give real life experience. We use the kitchen as teaching tool and reward system. We collect our recyclables and as a “payment” they get to earn their pay by choosing and making a snack as a class. We are “pros” at cake mix cookies. They easily fit into the time frame of our periods and the recipes can be created literally by the kids themselves. They also have to clean up, do dishes and above all cooperate with one another. We try not to use disposable items as much as possible therefore the items we are asking for can be used for greater periods of time.
