I chose Yummy as the main book for this project for several reasons. One, when I read it myself, I realized it poses key questions about humanity and people and whether or not people can be inherently good or evil, or if the way a person acts is because of nature or nurture. Two, I have heard from literacy instructors that the texts in this project are of high interest and very accessible to EL students, which is exactly what they need! I am trying to get a book in each student's hand so we can read together in class and explore topics like violence, good versus evil, relationships, and so on- ones they may have seen and will interact with during their lives. I also added two alternative approaches to Romeo and Juliet as ways to approach this classic text with my EL students.
