Every year, when January rolls around and it is cold and snowy outside, I enjoy creating bright and colorful creations using yarn. So I incorporate that into my classroom as well. The second grade students are introduced to weaving using paper. It is an easier medium for them to handle, but it is good for their fine motor skills to learn the repetition of over and under with paper. My third grade class is introduced to yarn weaving. This year we are using straws to learn to weave the yarn. Fourth though Seventh grade continue weaving on a variety of looms from cardboard to paper plates. My eighth grade class uses clothesline rope to create baskets. The students are always so excited to choose their colored yarn, and many of them tell me they are giving their project to someone special. I have had so many positive comments about creating with yarn. Some students remark how relaxing it is to weave, and ask if they could work on it at home. And I have been surprised by many a football and basketball player that even enjoyed this project.
