My middle schoolers are the epitome of sweet but sassy. They love learning about the world in its rawest and truest forms, no sugarcoating. The incredible non fiction account told in the book The 57 Bus is bold and honest and perfect for students with such a craving for real life. The books will be used for a novel study in an 8th grade reading class with a mixture of traditional students and those in the special education program. Students lose motivation quickly in a classroom if they are uninterested in the material, but the right book can change that completely. To help lite their fire for books, my students need stories that are theirs, stories they can see themselves in while still teaching them something new. We will read and analyze the accounts of two teenagers from Oakland, California whose lives cross everyday for only 8 minutes as they ride the 57 bus. Working independently, in groups, and as a whole class, we will explore themes related to race, the spectrum of gender, family, friendship, and the effects of background on point of view. The students will use this book to see the world through the eyes of a student who identifies as agender and the teenager who set them on fire. This book will allow my students to step out of their lives and into those of others, teaching them about empathy, connection, and curiosity while increasing the diversity of reading material they are exposed to. This book packs a punch of ideas and topics that are relevant but approachable, it will draw in the kids with its realness and keep them, teaching them to love reading without them even realizing it.
