When students have a choice in reading materials, they are more likely to read more and read longer! Research shows that reading as little as 15 minutes more a day can have a profound impact on reading growth. As a reading specialist working with reluctant readers in grades 3-5, I am overjoyed when a student begs for a book to read. Graphic novels literally open up the book and make it more accessible to readers who need pictures to support their comprehension along with words. By providing easy access to the books my students want to read, we will bring the joy and power of reading to all students but especially to the students who are in danger of falling further behind. English Language learners find these books especially appealing and are more apt to persevere in their acquisition of English while reading a graphic novel. Graphic novels get students in the reading ball game in search of homerun books! Thank you for considering to make a difference in the life of a child that will forever change their future and spark their curiosity about learning and reading! We can bring the joy and power of reading to students who need it the most!
