The light-up materials will enhance the hands-on-rich classroom that I strive to create. Distinguishing between colors and learning color names in English and/or Spanish is a goal for many of my students. My home-made sensory boxes are activities that my students really enjoy and that they use every day. Adding the Play and Explore Color Changing Light Kit will give my students more hands-on experiences with color. Each of the grant items I selected has different groups of my students in mind to reinforce skills that they working on in class. Every child has learning potential and with your help, my students can grow and learn to the best of their abilities. With these materials, my students will be engaged and exposed to cause-and-effect experiences. They will be able to touch the materials and explore what it does and how materials light up! They will feel success by knowing that they DID IT! With some practice, they will be able to select colors by choice and create new colors by overlaying the color pieces. I cannot wait to post pictures around our room of my students being successful. Research shows that sensory play builds nerve connections in the brain's pathways, supports language development, fine and gross motor skills, cognitive growth, and problem-solving skills. Sensory play also supports social interaction which is challenging for my students with Autism. Every opportunity that I can give them to increase their communication, gross motor and fine motor skills is a successful event.
