Reading is one of the top ways to increase students' comprehension and proficiency levels when learning a new language. As such, my students spend two days a week reading a novel of their choice in Spanish. I have been doing this with my students for several years and have seen some incredible growth in my students in the past. This technique helps every level of student because the novels are written at many different levels. My students who have lower reading levels in English tend to excel when reading in Spanish because the process is slowed down for them and the brain has time to connect the new words to meaning. I've had their English teachers come back and tell me that they are comprehending reading in English even better because they are reading in Spanish. My goal is to help the next generation of Americans to be biliterate. That is why reading is so important to me as a teacher. However, I have very few materials. The books that I do have, I've purchased myself over the years. I used to have many novels, but I changed schools and could not take the majority of books with me, so I am having to start a over by creating a new reading library. The variety of titles I'm requesting is so that my students have many different types of stories and reading levels to choose from. This project helps each student grow where he or she is currently at in the language. I am also asking for a literature rack so I can display these new books for my students.
