My entire school of students will build their literacy with real world relationships as every class in the building reads the same book, "The One and Only Ivan." This project includes the novel in English (and a few copies in Spanish) and a picture book version for younger grades. By ALL students sharing in one story, families and the school will be able to discuss as a community, increasing interest in reading, comprehension skills, and moving beyond the text. This particular story is fiction, but based on a true story of a gorilla that lived the end of his life in a nearby zoo. Students will find a true life connection with this book. As a sequel to the novel is coming out this summer, hopefully students will be further encouraged to continue reading and dive deeper into this subject. Literacy skills and an interest in the world around them are vital skills for our students!
