I teach marine science to high school students. Many of them are reading below grade level and don’t like to read because they are embarrassed that their skills are so low. I want to help increase their critical reading skills in my content area by providing them with a book of their own. Critical reading is a very important component of success in our society. My plan is to read to them as they follow along and provide the “self-talk” aloud that we do in our heads when we read. I have used this approach in the past and it has been wry successful.
