Two months ago, the house of one of our families caught fire and ended up destroyed. Everything was lost. We had two students in foster care who turned 18 and had to go live in homeless shelters. There are all kinds of sad stories that teachers witness in schools. Every year, we have about 10-12 students in that position for all kinds of reasons. I belong to a special group of adults at school (counselors, social worker, teachers, admissions officer) in charge of "keeping an eye" on such cases. The supplies -- the book-bags, pens, paper, notebook and cases -- will help us answer emergency situations. At a school where academic success is a must, we need to allow students to come to school prepared without loosing a beat. School supplies answer a basic need in order for students to do what they have to do: come to school prepared to learn. Thank you!
