Many of my students are learning to say one word or beginning sounds. In order for me and my team to get the students to say simple words we need highly motivating toys. Here is how this works. I have a ball that my student wants to play with. I hold the ball in front of them and wait for them to say "ball" or "want ball." Once they can request the ball they get to play with it for a little bit. Then I say "my turn" and hold out my hand in hopes of the student to give me back the ball. This whole sequence can be very hard for my students. Some of my students are learning to request toys by giving a picture to the teacher. When the student hands us the picture of the item they want, we will give them it. Pictures are a huge part of our communication skills too.
