This trip will give students a hands on experience to understand how our state government works. They will complete a three day mock legislative session in the buildings that our elected officials work at in Olympia. Students will work as senators, representatives, lobbyists, members of the press corps, and pages. My students are part of groups who have been historically underrepresented in our democracy. My students need to be affirmed that their voice is important. They have spent the past school-year working on bills that are important to them. One of the best parts of youth legislature is that students are in charge of the whole thing! They run the legislative sessions, build coalitions, and are the only voting members. By participating in youth legislature, my students are practicing their communication and problem-solving skills. These are skills that will help these students as they move to higher education and/or look for jobs.
