This project will teach life science across all aspects of the curriculum to all ability levels. Students will practice phonics and reading skills in small groups, reading all about animals that hatch from eggs. They will track and graph the incubation progress of our eggs. Above all, we will practice curiosity and questioning in their science journals each day. Once the chicks are hatched we will donate them to a local organic farm whose owner helps run our school garden. The majority of our students have limited/ uncertain housing, so the greatest benefit will be the stewardship and security they will be able to provide for another living thing. We have five students who have experienced extreme trauma and have daily behavior plans to support their ability to learn in our classroom environment. Making scientific study engaging will teach all our students responsibility and respect for all creatures. Being part of the process of creating life teaches not only core content but appreciation for all life's place in nature.
