Many of my students do not own a TI-30X IIS scientific calculator because their parents can't afford them. To people with a decent pay check, it may seem ludicrous, but I know many instances where parents really can't afford a $15 item. They rely on the school to provide these. Of course, the students who have a calculator share with their neighbors, but it does not work well because there is always someone who does not have a calculator in their hands. With the TI-30 IIS calculators, my students will use their calculator for various functions, including general math problems such as fractions. The calculator can work with a simple fraction, such as ¾, or a mixed fraction, such as 3 2/3. Unless otherwise specified, the calculator provides an answer containing fractions. To do fractions on the calculator, the numbers must be entered a certain way to ensure the calculator accurately performs the calculations. These skills are to be acquired or mastered quickly. Standardized tests allow the use of these calculators, so they are a good choice for the students.
