There are about 200 1st grade students in a DC Public Charter School. They are inquisitive, energetic, and hard working. These students make daily connections between the classroom and the world around them developing an excitement to learn. Our students have a great ability to make discoveries when they are working hands- on during projects. They come from low-income neighborhoods in the inner-city and a majority of them are on free or reduced lunch. Our students have college on their minds already by knowing when they are expected to graduate from college, having college homerooms, and connecting what they do on a daily basis to climbing the mountain to college. They study Math, Literacy, Writing, Phonics, Science/Social Studies, Spanish, Art, and Music on a daily basis. The school day goes from 7:30 to 4:15. Most of the learning is done through experience and guided discovery in centers. There is a lot of specialized attention through academic small groups in each subject.
