Kindergarten is an important year in a child's educational journey, as foundational reading skills are taught and practiced, building confident, strong readers. I am asking for donors to help fund my book order to help my kindergarteners learn to read. Reading to the class is very important, but it is just as important to read with the class, to allow the children to apply the skills I am modeling and that they are learning in order to really see growth in their ability to read independently. This is why my book order consists of 20 large books. Large books are a great way to engage the whole class in reading activities, sharing the story together, as a classroom of learners. Using large books provides the class with opportunity not just to read the books, but to interact with the books. For example, practicing concepts of print skills such as using a finger pointer to point to the words as they read, practicing turning the pages, using highlighter tape to highlight sight words on the pages, adding sticky notes to label pictures on the pages, and reading the words in fun and silly ways because they can all see the words at the same time. Using large books, also allows myself, as the teacher, to model good reading habits and reading strategies in which the children can then practice with me, using the large books. Shared reading is a crucial part of teaching foundational reading skills in kindergarten, and these large books will help my students to reach their reading goals of becoming independent readers!
