The use of print and pictures is almost a daily activity in my classroom, especially in reading and writing. Using the guided reading model in reading, students come to a small table for guided practice and to learn reading and comprehension strategies. Several of my students read below grade level and have academic, hearing and behavioral special needs. They struggle to focus at times. However, one thing that increases their interest is colorful pictures. We use these often for students to introduce vocabulary. Many of them have never seen or heard of some basic vocabulary words. Even though they are very curious and want to learn about the world, many have never left their local neighborhood or been to a small city. When I talk about the ocean, boats, suspended bridges, peacocks, snow activities, they look at me with a blank stare. By having this color printer, I can expose them to the greater world at large as well as storied, pictures and basic vocabulary about settings other than rural small towns. Opening a window to the world in color will help my students to better understand the stories we read, increase their interest to the world outside our classroom and focus on increasing their learning! By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve and increase student attention and focus, you will ultimately help to increase their academic achievement. Students will be able to see a window into the world in color they may never get to visit. This will increase their exposure to literacy as well as their desire to learn and have dreams that go beyond 20 miles from home.
