I teach in a rural/urban school setting. I have 23 first graders in my classroom. In our school we have close to fifty percent free and reduced lunches. Many of my students do not have the resources at home where the families can demonstrate fluent reading. Also, due to our location (distance from homes), my families are unable to commute to school to attend events such as "Back to School" night, "Family Reading" night, etc. They miss many opportunities to hear and see how to help their children succeed in school. I want to be able to model fluent reading for my students while they are here at school. One way to do this is by having up-to-date, working equipment for them to use in their listening stations.
