I have been teaching P.E. for over 23 years and as an educator it is amazing to see how students gravitate toward new ideas and new skills. I have had the benefit of working at an elementary school and a high school in the past and have brought disc golf programs to both. Disc Golf adds a totally different dimension to Physical Education. Unlike most units this sport is at a slower and relaxed pace which is both challenging and social. You can modify this sport in many ways that allows various degrees of difficult and can allow success for many students that struggle at traditional sports. Also the learning curve is quite fast, so students have a desire to want to keep playing and improve on their skills. Lessons would include: • Throwing a disc, (which is slightly different than throwing a frisbee) for distance, midrange and putting. • Types of throws: Backhand, Forehand, Apple – all of which have variations which makes the disc preform differently • Etiquette • Rules • Game Play By the end of the unit all students will be able to go out on a public course and be able to play a round of disc golf. The hope is that some will find a passion for the sport and will have another tool in their toolbelt to go out and get some exercise playing a new fun sport.
