The 4th grade is one of the most exciting grades for music class. For a few weeks, we step away from singing and playing games and focus in on becoming instrumentalists. Students are developing better fine motor skills, their brains are working faster, and everything that they have learned in music so far has lead up to this point. If a community wants to see great instrumental musicians, they have to start with the basics: recorders! The recorder is the first step into the transition between general music to instrumental music and prepares the students for middle school where they can translate what they have learned to other wind instruments such as the saxophone or clarinet. This is a vital step to become successful in middle school. I would love for each one of my 4th grade students to not have to worry about asking parents for money and then feeling discouraged after not receiving it. If each child could start with their very own recorder that they can take home, practice, and use for the rest of their lives, the learning process will start off much easier for them. It will make all the difference to these students.
