In our classroom, we combine art with nature by using calming colors, therapeutic music, and non-overstimulating visuals. I am teaching my students to paint to music, to use recyclable materials to make grand art projects and to manage behavioral outbursts through creation. Think yoga poses, rhythmic breathing, nature, and progressive art, science and math projects. Our goal this year is to find multiple ways to speak and interact. We will use charcoal and pastels to draw self-portraits on cardboard, aluminum foil or paper. My students will use wood number and letter tracing boards vs. the traditional plastic tracing materials to mimic real life and environmentally friendly materials. My special students will also benefit from having a fidget bin in our "Zen Zone."
