Currently, our 4th grade students play the recorder for a second year in an optional recorder ensemble group. I teach recorder in 3rd grade, so beginning the ukulele in 4th grade would allow students to experience playing a new instrument that I believe would be very beneficial.
Playing the ukulele directly involves students in their learning and allows students to feel a sense of accomplishment. Positive attributes of playing are working as a class to promote teamwork and enjoying a common social experience. Playing the ukulele also increases hand coordination and fine motor skills, better preparing our students for a band instrument in the 5th Grade.
My students work hard in their regular education classroom. The curriculum I would like to use would allow my students to be exposed to rock music through a program called Modern Band. I have tried this program at workshops and find it relaxing and fun. I love this program because students can play rock songs by using tablature (meaning they can follow symbols) and not specifically need to read notes. Struggling readers can excel in this system while improving memory by fingering chords. Playing an instrument is fun, benefits the brain, and allows students to express themselves, while the modern rock music will engage students and improve attitudes.
