A calm and relaxing environment is vital to kindergarten learners, allowing them to feel at peace and welcome in our classroom community. Mindful environments promote academic learning, as well as social and emotional learning. The softer lighting in my project will allow us to use less of the harsh overhead lighting, which can make it hard for learners to focus and can cause headaches. The mindful tools, such as the zen sand boxes, kinetic sand, and coloring materials will be used during our daily "mindful time." We use this time after lunch each day to bring our energy back down and allow us to practice self-care. In a world that is driven by productivity, data shows that it is important to take this downtime to mentally refresh. After being given this refresh time, my learners are much more productive and rejuvenated. In a world full of doing, doing, doing, it's important to take a moment to just breathe, to just be. -unknown Picture a five year old, new to the world of education. They wake up early each day to gather in their classroom amongst their peers, some of them having never left their families before. The rules, expectations, and rigor are more than they have ever experienced. Each day includes time with their new peers, learning to read, learning to count, add, and subtract. They learn to tie their shoes, about the symbols of the United States, about how weather and seasons impact our daily lives, how to make new friendships, and a myriad of other things. Our seven hours together each day is jam packed, and they are exhausted by the end of the day. Giving them a break, mindful time to breathe, teaches them healthy life habits at a young age.
