Our engineering students are learning how CAMS work, and then will coming up with their own design to power a toy Automata. I hope that by having access to a 3D-printer they will be able to experience creating a working prototype, and if the prototype doesn't work as hoped, can go and correct their design and make it again. It's important to understand that often times, designs are iterative. 3D printers have revolutionized the design process by allowing rapid prototyping. First they learn how CAMs are designed and see the connection between the rotation of the CAM and the shape for the CAM and how that makes the up and down motion of a figure inside the toy. Then they design the action that their toy will have. They draw out motion graphs and then translate these into a CAM design. They draw their CAM design using 3-D modeling software. Then they 3D-print their design and build the toy. Though this process they experience their idea coming to life.
