Through this trip and set activities, the students will be able to connect to their Bronx community, the Pelham Bay park and the waterways around Orchard Beach. The program is designed to use STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) to teach the stories of the Siwanoy and Lenape trips that used to inhabit the Bronx. By exploring how the tribes used natural resources to survive, the students will develop a deeper understanding of the role that nature plays in all cultures. This will encourage the students to become caretakers of their own local environment. As they begin to understand their own communities, they will develop ideas on how they can protect and preserve these resources.
