Because my students are so unique, I find unique and engaging ways for them to learn! Supporting literacy and a love of reading is so important in building the foundation for future success. Along with building first language literacy skills, bilingual books allow students learning English to make connections and to be successful in both languages. Students can see similarities between words and be able to compare and learn sentence structure. Allowing students to pair reading in both languages helps them to become more confident and successful readers, making them more eager to try their literacy skills in the second language. Not only do bilingual books help students with literacy skills and vocabulary development, but they also help to connect new English learners with their peers. Students are able to partner read with English speaking peers and build a sense of community in the classroom. This also allows English only speaking students to learn and discover a new language as well. Being a classroom family and making sure that students feel comfortable, welcome and accepted is essential in their success.
