My students learn best by doing hands-on projects. Three years ago my students started a small garden. Each year my ecology students add to the garden by doing a "Grow your own plant" project. This is a year long project and each students picks a vegetable they want to grow. I use their plants and the garden when teaching certain topics like nutrient cycling and food chains. Today, we are working towards finishing our greenhouse and we need these requested solar panels, sprinklers, a warning barrier, film, and a wall mount fan. We have to redo the plastic since a bad storm ripped it last year. We have put paneling on under the plastic to make it stronger. We have added an irrigation system and we would like to add the solar panels that will power fans to keep air flowing through the greenhouse. We are also completing our compost pile which we are building out of pallets and fencing, so we won't have to buy compost every year. Our students love this project. In the summertime, students, staff, parents, and even local community members come to pick fruits and vegetables. Not only are they participating in hands-on science learning, they are learning about nutrition, electrical flow, construction skills and so much more. They get so excited when they see the first tiny bit of green coming through the soil. They are so proud of themselves when they pick the first vegetable they grew. It has been such an amazing project for both the teachers and students. Please consider donating to our project. Thank you!
