Fun Fridays are an attempt to provide students with a safe alternative in order to reduce or completely avoid teen risk factors at North. Though we have after-school clubs and extracurricular activities, currently there is not a program in place to reach students that are not participating in after-school activities. We’re all aware that the teenage years are crucial as they face many life-changing decisions. We would love to think that their only focus is their academics; however, the reality is that teenagers are at risk of drug and alcohol use, teen pregnancy, and violence among others. This is without mentioning all the risks involving social media. Once a month the EL Department organizes Fun Friday, a day where students can come to a safe place to engage with their peers and teachers. Teachers provide games, activities, music, and most importantly a safe space. Teachers have been bringing personal games from homes such as Giant Jenga, Uno, and other board games. Students are able to build community through a variety of activities, there are pair activities, small group, and whole-group activities. So far the students’ favorite whole group activity is “Spoons”, a simple game that brings everyone to the table. The students have created many memories through Fun Fridays and continue requesting such events. The program began the 2018-2019 school year, students have been impacted by the relationships built, as these relationships help students collaborate in the classroom and learn more effectively. Furthermore, the relationships built among students and staff allows teachers to guide students with ease in the classroom. Students are often more responsive, this helps facilitate student engagement in the classroom and as well as classroom management. Overall this program seeks to care for the whole student in order to have students that are successful in the classroom.
