My students come to Orchestra from every corner of our city. With each year my classroom become more diverse and reflects the change in our city and school. Orchestra is not available in all schools in our state by any means and parents from all walks of life view the availability of string instruction as a true perk. Many of our students would be unable to take advantage of this program without school or donated instruments; we have never had to turn a student away because they couldn't afford an instrument. But, we have almost no budget to maintain these instruments. Many of our instruments have strings which are older than the students playing them. Students who must use these instruments deserve to have their hard work rewarded with a full and lovely sound. Regretfully those who are playing older donated instruments are often frustrated by the limitations of false strings or strings which cannot be tuned. In the past 58 years thousands of students have learned to play in our program. Our hardworking students have had many opportunities to expand their horizons through their music education. Many have continued to play in college and financed their education in full or part through scholarships. Our program allows students of limited means chances to learn necessary soft skills for successful living. Please help every one of my amazing, talented, kind and musical kids the opportunity to use their instruments to grow wings for their imaginations!
