I teach reading to 6th graders in a lower income, rural area. Many of my students have not developed an interest in reading and therefore feel they are not good at reading. Having worked with them for a semester, I know this is not true! They are readers who are curious and need access to a variety of books to help them learn to read not as a requirement but as a part of their daily life. Creating life-long learners with critical thinking skills and the motivation to question and learn more is one of the most important goals in my classroom. Reading helps instill this in students. Not only does it improve their vocabulary and writing skills, but it also teaches them to seek information for themselves and comprehend that information. Equity in access is vital in education. Regardless of socioeconomic or other home/family circumstances, all students deserve to learn without the worry of needing a pencil. I lend pencils to my students on a daily basis, and the box requested on my list would help to alleviate a great need in my classroom.
