As important as academics are, social and emotional skills are imperative for students to be successful as adults. The skills include: self-management, self-awareness, social awareness, responsible decision-making, and relationship skills. These are skills that don't necessarily come naturally. Even adults need to continue working on these skills. In my classroom I find time to incorporate SEL because I've seen the evidence and research to show that it works. Classrooms that practice SEL actually learn more because the interruptions, distractions, and conflicts have decreased. Students understand themselves and know how to manage their emotions. They know how to solve problems and how to solve conflict. They understand empathy and kindness. They know how to deal when things get tough. These are skills they will use for the rest of their life. One way I teach SEL is by reading books. Students love picture books and can usually relate to the story. I'm asking for this library so that I will have the resources to be able to successfully teach these skills and engage my students. This library will be used in my classroom for the next 30-40 years.
