I burrowed a set of tiles from a colleague and they are a masterful means of associating multiple mathematical concepts present in the 6th-grade curriculum with the real-world relevance of these particular topics. I was skeptical at first and thought this lesson would be viewed as playing with magnets. Boy was I wrong! The conversations and collaboration that went on between my students were priceless, and I saw a side of them that I simply must nurture and expand. I did the lesson yesterday and am writing the grant today. That is how profound the learning experience was. There were so many benefits to this type of lesson and it is one that can be applied to many more topics throughout the rest of this year and years to come. I only wish I had discovered them earlier than I did.
