Using both literature and dramatic play in speech-language therapy is not only fun and motivating for students, but it is research-based and found to be effective for improving literacy and language skills. Dramatic play allows students to practice a variety of important skills such as turn-taking, requesting, asking questions, making comments, perspective-taking, social skills, receptive and expressive vocabulary and more. Literature-based therapy is also a highly effective way to teach numerous speech and language skills including phonological awareness, listening comprehension, reasoning, inferencing, predicting, story retell, vocabulary, and even articulation skills. My students are always highly engaged when I incorporate these types of lessons into therapy and often request either play therapy or books when I give them a choice. Ever since I have begun to use these methods, students have shown tremendous progress towards their goals.
