One of the biggest challenges my students face in the classroom is negative behaviors due to sensory overload. The students desperately need a designated area to retreat to when the outside world has become too much. A sensory area will allow the students a safe place to go to help them regulate their body and mind. When someone has poor processing of sensory information, they may become quite uncomfortable and begin to display inappropriate behaviors. The sensory area will provide much-needed alternate lighting, pillows, and fidget toys to provide interventions to assist a student in regulating their moods and behaviors in order to be more successful in the classroom.
