Aloha, I am currently a special education teacher at KIS. I am in a co-taught line of English language arts and in my first year of teaching. I have noticed throughout my student teaching and in this first semester a huge disconnect from what our students are reading to their current reality and lives here in Hawai'i. Due to this, I want to purchase and read a book that is more relatable and meaningful to the students. I believe teaching students about their home (Hawai'i) in this case is vital to their educational journey, not only culturally but also for students to feel like they have a place that they connect to—even for students who may be in the military and are only here for a few short years. This book connects to choices and consequences, which is our focus this semester. It is a book about a student in Hawai'i who did not always do well in school until he realized he wanted to become a doctor. After facing the challenges of school and turning his academics around, he was then faced with having to leave Hawai'i to further his education and follow his dreams. No matter where you are from, it's never easy to leave home, but this is especially true to students in Hawai'i. I know this to be true because the farthest I moved was from Kaua'i to O'ahu (an island hop away). I am asking for help to get these books as I have 25 students. This would be great to see an increase of students making better text-to-self and text-to-world connections when the book is relating to their forever or current home, here in Hawai'i.
