For many years I have collected Monarch caterpillars and milkweed from the wild so that my first-grade students can observe the life cycle of butterflies. I chose the Monarch butterfly to also teach my students that milkweed protects the Monarch butterfly from preditors and that the milkweed plant is crucial in saving the Monarch butterflies from extinction. After the metamorphosis is complete we release the butterflies back into the wild. Creating a butterfly garden will allow my students to observe the butterflies after their release. My students have inquired about the butterfly's habitat. We currently do not have a garden available to the students. With this project, the students will be able to plant milkweed seeds in our classroom and then transplant them to the garden. Not only will they learn about butterflies they will learn about plants and environmental stewardship.
