In our sixth grade classrooms, we embrace the idea that learning is student led whenever possible. That’s why when one of our students proposed we spend a day at Kings Island immersed in math and science learning, we were intrigued! Then, as we explored this idea with our students, we realized a Kings Island Education Day might just be the perfect way to honor student voice in co-designing learning together. A day filled with hands on STEAM learning, including an Eiffel Tower Egg Drop, COSI Force and Motion Live Show, Construct a Coaster Contest, and Interactive Science Spots around the park, will have our sixth graders experiencing our area amusement park in a new way. Kings Island knows a day of fun aligned with Ohio and National Math/Science standards is just what we need to end our year with a learning bang! Our students will find new ways to appreciate that Math and Science concepts surround them every day. This will help them build a personal lens that notices opportunities for re-engineering and innovation. This new awareness, combined with King’s Island’s pre-planned learning experiences, will lead to powerful connections that will help fuel STEAM thinking in our students long term. And, of course, they will be reminded that learning can and should be FUN!
