Children innately want to learn and do well. As noted above, the students in my classroom have additional challenges that impact their ease and ability to do just that. Self-regulation; social-emotional and behavior challenges make it more difficult for them to learn. Making sure that my students are provided with the tools necessary to meet their varied needs is an essential component in not only enabling them to learn but allowing them to experience success with the goal of being mainstreamed with their peers in the general education setting. When my students are provided the sensory and learning tools that they need, I have noticed amazing differences in their abilities to focus, attend and learn. The materials that I have requested will help my students achieve their potential. The colored square carpet will provide visual cues as to where to sit during circle time. I will be setting up a corner in my classroom where the students can go to take a sensory break and self-regulate by utilizing the equipment. The Sit ‘n Spin will allow them to get some movement; the sensory activity table will be filled with tactile activities and the mattress and the hug chair will give them the deep pressure input they need to help self-regulate. Many of my students also have difficulty writing and the chalkboard and writing booklet will help them to achieve success.
