Students need to learn to read just for the pleasure of reading. If they are continually taught only to read what teachers specify, they will never grasp the beauty of escaping to a different world in a book. I usually purchase library books according to our curriculum requirements, however, students need the freedom to explore other topics and use their imagination. If I can get just one child to pick up a book and actually read it and love it - we just hooked a reader for life! G.W. Middle students have an interest in the paranormal and additionally a love of sports so I try to accommodate whenever I can!
