Many of my mainstream, special needs students have anxiety and/or sensory disorders. It's hard to focus on your work when you feel uncomfortable. Weighted blankets and compression vests will help students feel more comfortable so they can focus on learning. My students often need help focusing due to sensory problems. This can include being distracted by sounds, touch, and sight. Pressure from a compression vest or weighted blanket can act as a calming or focusing enhancer. This strategy also decreases heart rate and blood pressure (indicators of anxiety and stress) and causes the release of "happy" neurotransmitters (serotonin and dopamine) to create a sense of calm within their bodies.
