Social skills and problem solving are definitely lacking in American children due to the public education schedule. Over the past two decades, the American kindergarten experience has become much more academic—at the expense of play. Play is the work of children; and so much of a child’s learning is constructed through play. I truly believe we need to bring back more play into our day. Children experience authentic experiences with leadership, collaboration and deep problem solving through play. Children learn best through play because it allows them to apply everything they know. It encourages them to ask questions and seek out new information and discovery. Children in poverty are lacking, specifically, due to access to resources. However, these critical skills are for managing daily life. These materials will help me bring play into my academic-based centers. It’s my job as a kindergarten teacher to develop those skills as much as possible for a firm foundation. Help give my kiddos a fair chance!
