Every day my students dive into language arts lessons from a rigorous program. One week they might be comparing their day to a child that lived in Ancient Rome. Another week they are rewriting the ending to a classic tale we studied. During the first semester, my students grew to become experts at using the glossary in their readers to find vocabulary words. I am proud to say they want more: more vocabulary, more definitions, more synonyms -more words! Dictionaries will help my students grow their vocabulary, check their spelling, enhance their writing, and give them the confidence to find answers independently. A range of dictionary formats means that all my students have access to a tool that will support their learning. The large dictionaries will be used for class-wide reference and for practicing dictionary skills in a small group setting. Pocket dictionaries or thesauruses can be quickly grabbed and taken to a table or carpet for vocabulary word study or text editing.
