The focus in our 10th Grade World Literature Class is to explore the preservation of human rights through a variety of perspectives. Our next novel unit will center around Julia Alvarez's /In the Time of the Butterflies/, which tells the story of four resilient sisters who give up everything to defend their homes, families, and rights in the Dominican Republic. Based on a true story, this novel is both compelling and heart-wrenching. I can't wait to see how my students respond to this unit. We'll be using the card stock paper to visually represent the articles of The Universal Declaration of Human Rights and explore the connections between this seminal UN document and our central text.
