Students have been learning about viruses, bacteria, biological cycles, and classifications and identifications of living things and environments in which they live. Studying from a book or classroom lecture is helpful, but it isn't as captivating as seeing things first hand. Every year we have a project that helps student find value in the life that surrounds us. The project includes going to the local park to collect samples of water, leafs, dirt and other objects. Students take the samples back to the lab, prepare lab slides and look at them under the microscope. Students are able to see the tiny living systems that would otherwise go unnoticed. Students discuss how the organisms interact with the environment, what they need to survive, the organisms purpose, and how it influences the delicate balance of nature. I have done this project in my Biology classes for many years. Students love it and discover so many things that they normally would not have the opportunity to see. I would like to continue this project in the future, but my microscopes are very old and many just don't work anymore. My Biology class uses microscopes for multiple purposes and this project is just one example. Please help me continue to show students the tiny worlds around us.
