Children need explicit instruction on social and emotional skills just as they need to be taught core academic content. They must learn to self-regulate and to interact with others in a positive and respectful way. Some of these types of skills are developed through day-to-day experiences, but they can also be acquired by reading texts that tell a story and send a message. Picture books with interesting story lines are highly engaging to students, and when supplemented with class discussions and activities, can teach important life lessons. Our children need guidance and support when they face problems in their lives, both big or small. Picture books help us proactively teach the skills that are essential for students to become successful members of society.
